Sleep is the body’s time to heal. When we are sleeping, our internal organs are restored and repaired. Hormones are released throughout the body that maintain our stress levels as well as our appetite and metabolism. Memory consolidation also takes place, which allows the brain time for storage and formation of new memories. Sleep also allows the brain time for dreaming, which is an essential part of a healthy sleep cycle.
There is a direct connection between getting proper sleep and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Benefits include increased energy, a stronger immune system, improved memory, heightened alertness, and increased focus and creativity. Sleep also improves mood and libido. People who have quality sleep also exhibit decreased symptoms of anxiety, irritability, and exhaustion.
